A short blog post. Some thoughts.

20 years ago today. September 11, 2001.

The day humanity witnessed evil take hold in the bastion of human prosperity.

I was 12 years old, in a different part of the world and still vividly remember seeing it on TV in the morning.

Never forget it.

Use it to remind oneself of what humans are capable of if they so choose: destruction, chaos and misery.

Then remind yourself to never, ever sanction that – to unite under life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and do not grant one millimeter to evil. Darkness triumphs when there is room for shadow. Burn through it with unyielding light and justice.

Say what you will of how our political leaders and societies have failed to deal with what happened 20 years ago, but I am certainly never giving up on the goodness of humanity and what we can build. You shouldn’t, either.

Australian by birth, Serbian by blood, American in spirit.

When one acts on pity against justice, it is the good whom one punishes for the sake of the evil; when one saves the guilty from suffering, it is the innocent whom one forces to suffer. There is no escape from justice, nothing can be unearned and unpaid for in the universe, neither in matter nor in spirit—and if the guilty do not pay, then the innocent have to pay it.
